Happy Holidays!

The holidays can be a stressful time. For seniors and their families, it can be especially taxing.

We hope that these suggestions help make your holidays more memorable and happy!

Holiday Tips

For seniors with memory loss and the people who love them!

For Seniors

  • Watch old Christmas or Holiday movies
  • Spend time reminiscing
  • Continue holiday traditions ~ making cookies, sending cards, etc.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Exercise if possible
  • Enjoy sweets in moderation
  • Take time to relax
  • Listen to music and sing along

For Families and Caregivers

  • Begin visits with a friendly smile
  • Talk about ‘old times’ more than recent information
  • Keep memories positive
  • Do something with the senior rather than just talking to them
  • Keep gatherings small
  • Make gifts safe and useful
  • Have nametags if the gathering will be large
  • Have a quiet place ready if the festivities become overwhelming
  • More tips for celebrating the holidays with loved ones with dementia are available through the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
